The Robot
The robot is called SM-1. Named after Steven Mallory, the sculptor from The Fountainhead.
"Your figures are not what men are, but what men could be, and should be." - The Fountainhead
The robot was developed to carve stone by Gondor Industries.
Gondor Industries combines robotics and AI to shift architecture to timeless stone construction. Every sculpture sold funds the improvement of the robots and the team working to re-industrialise stone.
The sculpture is carved in white marble, then hand-finished by a Carrara-trained sculptor. The robot removes 95 to 98% of the material with precision. The final 2 to 5% is completed by hand. Technology and craft, working together.
Rand wrote about men who built things that lasted. She believed the individual mind is the engine of progress. A machine named after her fictional sculptor, carving her likeness in stone. That is the tribute.
The Process
Phase I: Robotic Milling
Phase II: Hand Finishing
Phase III: Delivery and Placement
The Mission
Become an infrastructure for beautiful stone monuments, buildings, towns and cities
